While you don't get the sensation of smelling scented candles when buying online, you can find exactly what you're looking for by using these insights.

Can we agree that there's nothing like the warm, inviting ambiance created by scented candles? They are the ultimate must-have when you're trying to set the mood.

It seems a bit anomalous to think about buying scented candles without the use of your sense of smell. You may get a sense of how they smell when you see them online, but at best it's only an idea of their fragrance.

But don't focus only on the candles that smell amazing. Consider also the color, size, wax, wick, and purpose of the candle. Figure out what will work best for you and the intention you have for the candle.

Luckily, we're here with some tips on how to find your perfect scented candle without having to leave home!

Setting the Intention

What do you want to use this candle for? Will you be doing work on an altar with this candle? Will it be there to create warm lighting and a cozy atmosphere in your venue?

If you're looking to honor the new moon, you'll need a black candle scented with citrus or frankincense. If you're doing a full moon ritual, a white candle with cedar, honeysuckle, or wild roses fragrances will do. If you would like to encourage cheer among your guests, burn a basil candle in the living room.

Knowing what your intention is for your candle before you buy is important. It will help you to determine the size of the candle you need. It will also guide you in choosing the color of your candle and the fragrance.

You may find it useful to look into the principles of Feng Shui scents. Introducing certain fragrances in specific areas of your space will help to promote a healthy balance of energy.

Finding Your Fragrance

As you begin your search for the perfect candle, it's important to know what your favorite scents are.

The first step in choosing a fragrance for your new candle is choosing which type of scent you prefer. There are 4 major fragrance groups. They are:

  • Oriental
  • Woody
  • Fresh
  • Floral

Take a look at the fragrance wheel and identify which type suits you best. Once you've made this decision, think about what mood or feeling you want to convey when using your candle.

Romantic? Sophisticated? Uplifting? Refreshing? Attracting abundance? These details can help narrow down exactly which scents you need to help you attract what you're looking for.

Here are a few examples of how you can use fragrance to strengthen your intention:

  • Vetiver or clove for abundance
  • Jasmine is a great floral candle to encourage love
  • Rose is good to create a romantic mood
  • Vanilla (the most liked fragrance in the world!) is great for anything from fighting infection to easing anxiety
  • Cinnamon boosts productivity
  • Citrus, coffee, and mint are all energizing
  • Mint or lavender for relaxation

Which Wax Is Winner?

There are many different types of waxes available for making candles, and each one has its own set of pros and cons.

Soy wax is the most expensive option. A soy wax candle is considered to be of the highest quality as it burns cleanly and releases little soot into the air.

Paraffin wax is cheaper than soy wax but isn't as kind to the environment. It produces more harmful chemicals during burning than other types of waxes do.

Beeswax candles are naturally scented (and are also said to have health benefits) but can be difficult to find in stores. They are also quite pricey.

When buying online, try browsing through some blends of scents and waxes that sound interesting to you. You may find something unexpected, or even decide to create your own custom candles!

What About the Wick?

The wick is the part of a candle that burns. It melts the wax, which then releases the aromatherapy benefits of a scented candle. There are several different types of wicks:

  • Straight (Most Common)
  • Straight wicks are typically made from cotton or paper and are best used for producing medium-to-low scent throws. Sometimes they are wax coated. This gives them a longer burning time.
  • Spiral (Less Common)
  • Spiral wicks give off excellent fragrances but are not suitable for indoor use. They tend to smoke when burning and emit soot into the air. They can also burn too fast if not trimmed properly before lighting your candle. This could result in wasted wax and an unsightly mess on your hands!

Other Burning Considerations

Once you've figured out what kind of candle you want, you should also consider the burning time.

Candles sold in retail stores have a burn time of 12-14 hours. There are longer burning options available if you're willing to spend more on your candles. If you don't want to light your candle every night or if you'd rather give it as a gift, we recommend investing in one with a long burn time.

Another thing to remember when buying scented candles is to check if they contain harmful chemicals. Most companies disclose their ingredients on their website or packaging. Look for products labeled "100% natural" or "100% pure". This ensures that you're not exposing your loved ones to anything that could harm them.

The size of the room, as well as how you want to use it, will also help you to establish what type of candle is best for you. Think about the packaging, too. Do you need the candle to be in a jar or holder, or will they stand on surfaces around your room?

Finally, you should consider whether the candle is handmade and/or poured by hand. A handmade candle will usually cost more than a mass-produced one. They're made from higher quality ingredients and need more labor from skilled artisans. These masters create candles by hand using any one of a few traditional methods.

The Low-Down: Buying Scented Candles Online

You might have never thought about shopping for scented candles online. With so many options available, it can seem overwhelming trying to select the right one. Especially if this is your first online candle-shopping adventure!

You need to consider size, wax type, burn time, and purpose. There are also dozens of fragrances to choose from.

We hope that this candle buying guide has helped you a little. Be sure to take a look at our article on properly caring for your candles!
